Keys To Successful Blogging for Marketing Your Work with SEO

Keys To Successful Blogging for Marketing Your Work with SEO
• Choose appropriate topics for postings - related to a new book or product in your industry.
• Include a catchy title for your blog posts – it should give a brief overview of the post your blog is about.
• Aim for short and to the point postings - try to make them at 350 words or less. As I say less is more.
• Write posts with a friendly, conversational tone - openly invite your visitors to post replies by always ending in a question?
• Close the post with a clincher or request for replies - such as “what do you think?”
• Integrate a poll – people love to give their own opinions!
• Consider hiring someone to make regular postings – about 3 to 5 per week

Power of Social Network Marketing, Web 2.0: & Google

The Authority

Power of Social Network Marketing
By Dennis Schleicher
I was utterly amazed when I received the following e-mail which I quote from below. “Author House is now proud to offer our new Social Media Setup Service that will help make your entrance into the world of social media much easier. You get:

  • A blog using the wildly popular and easy-to-use WordPress platform.
  • A Facebook profile for your identity as an author.
  • A Facebook page for your book.
  • A MySpace page for your book.
  • And more!

When you order this month, you will get our special introductory pricing of $999. Once all of your accounts are in place, AuthorHouse will send you your account information, as well as instructions for maintaining your accounts.”

The reason for my amazement was that this company was charging $999.00 for something that cost $0.00. Any author, in less than thirty minutes, can get onto the internet, do exactly the same thing, spend absolutely nothing and achieve the same results for which they want to charge $999.00.

The other thing I noticed is that the blog platform they chose was WordPress which, though very good, often requires knowledge of HTML code to handle some of its quirkiness. Blogger or Typepad are both easier platforms for the beginner and are similar to writing something in MS Word. The other thing I noticed was that the $999.00 was the introductory price, meaning that there would be further charges down the line even though they will expect you to maintain your own pages. Now the reasons for my shock is that I run a business working with authors, teaching them how to build exposure for their books using social networking and blogging as effective marketing tools. Building the blog or social network site such as Facebook or My Space is something every author should do. However, it is like putting up a store in the middle of a field. If there is no road to the store, nobody will come and buy. The value is not just in having a blog or being on Facebook, the value is in knowing how to use these tools to your advantage to build your reputation and to get buyers for your books. Web-based marketing, often referred to as ‘Web 2.0’ is the best way for you to build a platform of potential buyers who will comprise your market share. Forget about the old advertising tactics since these do not work online. Instead, build a relationship with your readers. As a member of CAPA, you are interested in developing lines of communication and networking to help you learn how to write, publish and market your book. By using the powerful tools of blogging and social networking, you are doing the same thing, only online. Instead of working with hundreds of people, you have the potential of working with thousands.

If you are going to “spend money to make money” online, don’t waste it by buying free services at high prices. Instead, spend it on learning how to take these tools and make them work for you. As a professional, it bothers me to see people not achieving their potential. This is especially true of authors. You can be selling your books to readers around the world. All it takes is learning to make effective use of all the wonderful, FREE tools available.

Editor’s note: Dennis Schleicher will be presenting an hour-long workshop on this topic, “Find Your Way Through Web 2.0” as part of CAPA-University, http://www.aboutcapa.com/ on May 9, 2009 in Hartford.

Dennis Schleicher is the CEO of Market & Sell More Books. He helps authors make effective use of all the online blogging and social marketing tools so that they may build sales for their books. He can be reached at http://www.marketsellmorebooks.blogspot.com/

Podcasting 101: Not a Tech Person? No Problem! Not a Tech Person? No problem!

Podcasting 101: Not a Tech Person? No Problem!
Not a Tech Person? No problem!
By Kati Neville

True or false: Podcasting is only for command-line code jockeys and 8th grade boys.

False.

Sure, we can make podcasts sound technical. A podcast is, after all, a digital audio file downloaded via the World Wide Web by users at their convenience, often to a portable media player. But podcasting, podcasters, and the tools of the trade, have gone mainstream. So mainstream that an entrepreneurial, cookbook-writing, 4-H mom like me can do it. And if I can do it, you can too.

Last July I launched my free podcast, The Saver's Kitchen. After thousands of downloads, I can proclaim confidently that podcasting has been a fantastic addition to my platform.

Podcasting may be a sound addition to your author platform too. Here's why:

In 2010, market researchers expect the podcast audience to exceed 50 million. Apple's iPod, just one of many portable media players, currently connects over 150 million users to the web. And what do you suppose will happen to the listening audience if national policy makers pass a rural broadband bill? Certainly, more than a few of those additional 60 million Americans will start listening too.

More than ever consumers are seeking unique voices, information, and thoughtful analysis. They are on the hunt for high-quality content. Radio host turned consultant, Holland Cooke,
excited the audience at Podcast Academy recently.

Podcasting is "narrowcasting," he says, because the audience must actively seek you out. "You are shooting a laser beam. Broadcast stations are using a shotgun." These small, narrow audiences make valuable prospects for marketers. Popular shows, like MommieCast and Grammar Girl, earn hosts profitable sponsorships, visibility, and publishing contracts.

In the coming weeks, spend time exploring podcasts that interest you. You don't need to be a subscriber or own a portable media player. In fact, most podcasts are consumed directly from the creator's website or a podcast directory.

Locate podcasts produced by fellow writers. Author James Howard Kunstler, host of KunstlerCast (be advised: explicit content) publishes a new episode weekly.

Journalist Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast explores historical and history-related issues.

The few podcasts I've highlighted here were chosen to display diversity in content and structure. Listen to whatever suits you. As you listen, identify what you like and dislike about various shows. Ask friends, family, and your current readers which podcasts they enjoy listening to and why. Then dream. Free yourself of technology concerns. Don't limit your creativity. That's the fun of podcasting. We'll discuss how.

Kati Neville is coauthor of the best selling cookbook, Fix, Freeze, Feast. She is a contributing editor for The Saver's Kitchen podcast and regularly blogs on The Forklift. Kati teaches cooking classes in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. When not online or teaching, Kati enjoys writing and tasting new recipes in her kitchen.

Tricks and Tips To Go Blog Wild

Tricks and Tips To Go Blog Wild
by Dennis J. Schleicher

When your book comes out, its Blog should too! Word=of=mouth has taken on a whole new meaning with the growth of social networking sites, like wordpress.com, typepad.com and blogger.com, opening the doors to both local and international markets. Blogs forge a personal connection with readers, adding local perspectives vital for successful international marketing of your work.

Buyers are increasingly immune to old marketing techniques. Consumers have spam filters and are constantly blocking pitches from PR firms hired by authors who have spent their hard earned money believing this would get the word out. Dollars better spent would be for you or a friend to build a blog and a series of social network sites.

People are increasingly relying on the Internet, namely the search engines, and social medial to get their information on the new up-and-coming authors or the hot topic books. Old methods such as print ads, direct mail, and so on are becoming a thing of the past. This is why our 21st. century approach is to recalibrate our marketing to engage the readers where they are - reading Blogs!

Of course, you will not be alone. According to Technorati.com, there are over 100 million blogs worldwide and over 175,000 new blogs are created each day. Our readers are there. They are reading, writing, and discussing our books.

How do you turn your blog into a money making enterprise! Well, first you position yourself as a knowledgeable leader in your genre. Then you get your blog found by using search engine optimization. And finally, you engage your readers in a dialogue using the 'Comment' system available on all blogs.

You can also generate income from advertisers, promotions, affiliate links and other techniques; all from your own home. So the bottom line is that you can make money by having a blog that promotes you, builds your credibility as an author and expert, sells your book, and provides you with income with other techniques.

So, if you want success, blogging is the answer.

“Ask Dennis….?” Market, Sell, Market, and Sell More Books!!! By Dennis J. Schleicher

QUESTION: I’ve written four books on the sensitive genre that belongs to a niche market, and I want to start promoting them on the Internet. The time I have is valuable. Where should I focus my efforts promoting my book: on Myspace.com or blogs?

ANSWER: There’s no excuse or reason why every author, editor, publisher, and marketing expert doesn’t take advantage of promoting their work on MySpace, even if time is limited. After all, time is money.

By now, after reading the August issue of The Authority, I hope you’ve all taken advantage of this free monster, i.e. MySpace. MySpace is the number one visited website in the world. MySpace is a lot like multilevel marketing. We’ve all been invited to Amway meetings, where we listen to sales pitches on developing these massive pyramid schemes. Well, think of MySpace as your pyramid only with no money down. Here you are along with billions of free subscribers. Each day they are able to connect to your site and purchase your work plus become your fans, your following, and your friends. It’s as though you’ve joined a club, a VERY LARGE club, with members who can relate to you and what you do.

QUESTION: So, how do I begin to market on My Space?

ANSWER: During the first month after taking advantage of the free setup service on MySpace, you should search for members who are in your niche. There are several ways to do this. Firs you are going to search groups or blogs pertaining to your book genre by clicking “group” as the top of your page and checking your interest area. Sign up for these groups and connect with the members. Next, search for people that are friends of fellow authors in your sub genre by searching their names in the “search” section. Then simply search for possible customers on your home page by typing into “search” the words that are redolent to your work, life, fiction writers or authors who specialize in cooking or whatever your topic. Note: Every time you find someone that is a possible connection, click the button on their page asking to be their friend. This then sends a message to their e-mail that you are interested in them. In order to say yes or no to your request, they will visit your page to see if you have something in common. If they like what they see, they recognize that you have something important to say. The more friends you have, the more you get noticed, the more potential customers will know about your work.

QUESTION: Now that I’ve found these people and made “friends” to them, what do I do?

ANSWER: Set goals. Take a couple months and generate your buzz on MySpace by posting a couple of paragraphs of excerpts from your book. Follow this by creat5ing a link to your non My Space blog or your website. This will draw your reader away from MySpace and bring them to your own space. Be sure to stay consistent with your verbiage as MySpace is linked with Rss feeds. These feeds are directly associated with search engines like Google, Yahoo, AOL and MSN. They constantly search all pages for commonly used term and the more often a phrase is used in connection with your work, the higher up the Google or other search page you will appear. So, what I mean is, say consistent with your vocabulary. This means use key phrases consistently on every one of your sites that will be recognized by your target audience. Be specific. For example, if I Google Dennis Schleicher, it will notice all of the feeds and links that bring you to the different forums—blogs, webpage’s etc. with which I’ve associated myself. You’ll notice in my blogs, forums, and on MySpace there are hook lines to my niche markets: Phrase’s I repeat often in my blogs and on MySpace.

  • Support for the Other Man.

  • Infidelity, Cheating Spouses.

  • Is my husband gay?

If you go to Amazon.com and search;

  • The Affair, cheating husbands, I show up number two.

  • Forbidden Love, infidelity, I’m number one in the ranking.

  • Other Man, Support – number two.

The more times you mention key phrases that represent your work, the higher your chance of showing up, in prominent positions on search engines when people Google those specific words. With a little work, you will get these search engines steering people directly to your blogs, MySpace, or website.

*“Ask Dennis…?” Market, Sell, Market, and Sell More Books!!!*

*“Ask Dennis…?” Market, Sell, Market, and Sell More Books!!!*

By Dennis J. Schleicher

What is /all/ the buzz? Communication = sales! At first very hesitant, Burger King Corporation has jumped on the ever popular growing success bandwagon of MySpace.com. The fast food giant is sponsoring a special “Have It Your Way” page reflecting the company’s US marketing slogan in a move that marks one of the biggest efforts by a large advertiser wanting to tap into the growing audience of social network users. Burger King has over 260,000 friends in their network. That's not too shabby a following for “Having it Your Way!” Another to follow this success is Wendy’s fast food which now has over 88,000 friends in its MySpace network. This unprecedented audience growth has led big advertisers such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola and Toyota to try to reach their user base and *not pay for advertising*. Creating a MySpace account, invites their customer base to become their MySpace friends. Using social networking is more cost-effective. It is less expensive to hire a full-time employee to manage a MySpace account than it is to hire an /entire/ advertising firm. Why is it so worthwhile? They are communicating with their market base and communication means sales.

If celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, and Martha Stewart all have MySpace accounts and corporate owned web blogs then there must be a reason. That reason is communicating with their market base and communication means sales.

You say, but these are big corporations, and I’ve just written a book. But I ask what's stopping you as authors, publishers, and professional editors from using this free social networking? Just ask yourself, “Would I like thousands to know about my books without spending a penny or leaving my home?” If you say yes, read about an author who does. **

Meet Connecticut Author and CAPA-U 2008 speaker Lauren Baratz-Logsted. She has over 42,000 friends in her network on MySpace. This allows her the opportunity to connect with her readers and fans personally through her blogs and posts. Lauren describes herself on her “about me” page saying “My life is my family, friends and writing. I published three novels as of the date I signed up here, 6/9/06.” Lauren is an author who understands the value of connecting and communicating with her readership through MySpace, and communication means sales.

As for me personally, it's been a little over a year since I started focusing energy working the system of MySpace. Mind you, that time was worth its weight in gold. I think of it as building a house. The work I did for my home on My Space created a solid foundation. Now this “house” is being decorated and maintained. Unlike the time spent in constructing it, I only dedicate a few hours a month to maintaining and updating the MySpace page. To date, I have close to 800 friends. When in the building process I was searching for people who share my interests and inviting them to be my friends. Now I no longer have to invite anyone, they come to me. If someone would like to become my friend, they must personally send me an invitation. I check out their page to make sure there's nothing provocative, and it's not considered spam, then I hit approved or denied. What this does is give me a group of friends with whom I communicate that care about what I do and write, and communication means sales.

I suggest all of you take advantage of this FREE opportunity. If you need help, visit a blog I set up especially for answering your questions, and sharing comments and success stories: www/MarketSellMoreBooks.blogspot.com

Things I will share in the future issues of /The/ /Authority/;

· Questions and concerns you have about becoming a successful blogger?
· What's holding you back from tapping in to this free marketing giant?
· Your success stories with MySpace or Blogs?
· Let's share and network together as this is what CAPA is all about.

Happy Book selling!
